En nyare utveckling, främst för kontroll av mycket komplexa lösningsströmmar, är att använda adsorption med aktivt kol för anrikning av förorenande ämnen i extraherad luft på normalt sätt. Adsorptionstiden är dock avsevärt längre (kan vara dagar istället för timmar) och behandlar lägre och fluktuerande koncentrationer. Den desorberade lösningsströmmen med hög värmekapacitet genereras genom att varmluft flödas genom kolbädden och gasströmmen med högre koncentration används för att emellanåt driva en oxidator som kan ge värme och/eller strömförsörjning till resten av fabriken.
