Edible Oil

Activated carbon is widely used in the purification of edible oils from a variety of raw materials, including palm, olive, coconut and rape sources. It can effectively alter colours and remove toxins that are naturally present or entrained as part of the extraction or refining process. One particular concern is a group of contaminants called Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (or PAH), with main consideration of the compound Benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P).

We have conducted research to assess the efficiency of the treatment process using different types of carbon. This work was initially undertaken in conjunction with the independent French Institute, ITERG who are highly specialised in evaluation of trace compounds in fats and oils. Further research has been conducted with a major edible oils producer to assess how activated carbon performs on an industrial scale. The standardised analytical method chosen is based on B[a]P reduction which can be correlated with high molecular weight PAH removal.
