APPLICATIONS & SOLUTIONS

Energy Storage

The global market for energy storage continues to rapidly expand, as global economies look to move away from fossil fuel-based energy sources and toward more sustainable alternatives. The shift to electric vehicles which employ batteries and supercapacitors is one example of this trend. The development of large-scale battery storage systems to capture and hold energy from intermittent sources such as wind and solar power is another example. Firms developing devices for these energy storage applications can turn to a familiar technology to aid in their design: activated carbon. Furthermore, as battery developers look to long term sustainability in their industry as well as stretching the supply of various critical materials used in these devices, the recycling of batteries to recover these materials will grow in importance in the future. Activated carbon and ion exchange, two technologies at the core of Jacobi’s business, will have a fit in these recycling applications as well.

Supercapacitors

The most dominant technology within the supercapacitor market remain Electric Double-Layer Capacitors (EDLC) that utilize activated carbon in their electrodes.  After years of development, Jacobi launched our PowerSorb EL-100 series products in 2024 to serve this dynamic and growing market segment.

Silicon Anode

After years of optimizing the cathode chemistry in batteries, battery developers have more recently turned to improving the energy density of anodes.   One of the most promising areas of development is silicon-based anodes as an alternative to the more mature technology of graphite anodes.
