Por lo general, la fuente de calor fiable más abundante es el vapor seco a baja presión, que se puede suministrar a un lecho de carbón activo saturado con el disolvente, generalmente en flujo descendente, para volatilizar y conducir al disolvente desorbido a equipos auxiliares (decantadores o destiladores) para así separarlo del vapor condensado. Con frecuencia, este disolvente puede volver inmediatamente al proceso en el que se utilizó originalmente. Después de vaporizar, el lecho de carbón se seca y se enfría a la espera de la entrada de aire cargado con disolvente. Por lo general, se utilizan múltiples adsorbentes para que el proceso pueda continuar sin interrupciones.
