Bland de vanligaste formerna av kol finns stenkol, kokosn\u00f6tskal, tr\u00e4, torv och brunkol.<\/p>\n<p>Noga utvalda r\u00e5material bearbetas i l\u00e5ga temperaturer f\u00f6r att avl\u00e4gsna naturliga flyktiga komponenter och resterande fuktniv\u00e5er. Detta \u00e4r det inledande f\u00f6rkolningssteget. Detta f\u00f6ljs av att det f\u00f6rkolnade r\u00e5materialet passerar genom aktiveringsugnar med mycket h\u00f6g temperatur i ett strikt kontrollerat fl\u00f6de av \u00e5nga som anv\u00e4nds som oxideringsmedium.<\/p>\n<p>Den resulterande produkten \u00e4r en kraftfull adsorbent med en m\u00e4ngd porer i molekyl\u00e4ra dimensioner. Vid skanning med ett elektronmikroskop \u00e4r porerna tydligt synliga och ser ut som en por\u00f6s svamp. Jacobi Carbons material tillverkas antingen av tr\u00e4s\u00e5gsp\u00e5n, bitumin\u00f6st kol, antracitkol, men allra oftast kokosn\u00f6tsskal, som \u00e4r Jacobis prim\u00e4ra r\u00e5material. Detta kallas adsorption. Vid fysisorption f\u00f6rs det kontaminerande \u00e4mnet in i kolgranulatet via transportporer (meso- och makroporer), sprids i kolmatrisen tills det n\u00e5r de mindre porerna (mikroporer) d\u00e4r de adsorbtiva krafterna aktiveras. N\u00e4r det n\u00e5r omr\u00e5den med h\u00f6gre energi blir de adsorbtiva krafterna st\u00f6rre \u00e4n diffusionskrafterna och det kontaminerande \u00e4mnet fastnar i mikroporen. Vid fysisorption sker ingen reaktion och det kontaminerande \u00e4mnet f\u00f6rblir of\u00f6r\u00e4ndrat. Det kan desorberas och \u00e5tervinnas genom \u00f6kad temperatur eller minskat tryck vilket \u00e4r grunden f\u00f6r alla l\u00f6sningar f\u00f6r \u00e5tervinning av l\u00f6sningsmedel. Vid kemisorption f\u00f6rs det kontaminerande \u00e4mnet in i kolet via diffusion precis som ovan, men adsorbenten \u00e4r speciellt parad f\u00f6r att fr\u00e4mja kemiska reaktioner d\u00e4r det kontaminerande \u00e4mnet konsumeras. Specialkol finns tillg\u00e4ngligt fr\u00e5n Jacobi Carbons i vilket ytterligare kemikalier l\u00e4ggs till p\u00e5 kolets yta och reagerar med specifika kontaminerande \u00e4mnen, t.ex. kvicksilver, eller med kontamineringsgrupper, t.ex. fr\u00e4tande gaser. N\u00e4r koncentrationen av det kontaminerande \u00e4mnet ligger \u00f6ver den acceptabla utsl\u00e4ppsniv\u00e5n anses det aktiva kolet vara f\u00f6rbrukat och m\u00e5ste bytas ut. I situationer d\u00e4r det \u00e4r sv\u00e5rt eller om\u00f6jligt att m\u00e4ta utsl\u00e4pp tas ett prov av kolet fr\u00e5n l\u00e4mplig adsorbtionszon och skickas till Jacobi Carbons f\u00f6r analys av \u00e5terst\u00e5ende livsl\u00e4ngd.
